Technology Head

Mr Howorth is the Curriculum leader for Design and Technology. He finds it extremely rewarding to be able to shape and mould the Designers and Engineers of the future as they problem solve and manufacture through emerging eyes.

Year 7

During Year 7 the students complete projects in Product Design and in Food and Nutrition with the academic year split evenly between these two areas.

In Product Design, students will gain valuable workshop experience and will be introduced to the equipment and machinery used within all specialist subject areas within DT.

Students will produce a working USB light based on a specific client using computer aided manufacture (CAM).

Further projects studied in year 7 will develop basic skills in computer aided design (CAD) and computer aided manufacture (CAM) as well as graphical techniques. These skills will enable students to produce products to a professional standard.

Students develop an understanding of Food and Nutrition through 18 weekly practical sessions. This enables students to learn where food comes from, how to cook a range of dishes safely and hygienically and to apply their knowledge of healthy eating. They will learn how to use the cooker, hob and grill and a variety of smaller pieces of equipment to produce a range of predominately savoury products to a professional standard.

Year 8

The Design and Technology department at Southlands High School aims to provide learners with a broad and exciting experience through engaging schemes of work.

Students are given opportunities to work with a range of subject areas including Product Design and Cooking and Nutrition.

In year 8 students are encouraged to think imaginatively to design and make products using a wide range of materials.

Learners will be taught how to problem solve covering themes such as health, sustainability and manufacturing.

The projects covered enable the students to develop transferrable personal skills that can be used within any subject area.

Students learn from first-hand knowledge and experience working with tools and modern equipment that can be found in the Design and Technology industry.
